Jesus’ words in this week’s passage are some of the most penetrating of the entire Sermon on the Mount. We’re forced to ask, “Why do I do this?” and “How am I doing it?” and “For whom am I doing this thing?” Jesus brings these questions to three activities: giving, praying and fasting. Be prepared to ask hard questions and allow Jesus to search out and bring to light your motivations. And be prepared to see what it looks like to do these things and others in a way that honors God and leads to a flourishing life.
