A Life of Humble Service
August 16, 2020
As Jesus' disciples gather around the table for the Passover feast, Jesus walks past them and removes his cloak. He hangs it on a hook on the wall, picks up a towel and a basin of water, and then begins to wash the feet of each of the twelve men that have followed him closely for the past three years. As he assumes the position of the lowliest servant in the household, each man wonders to himself, "Isn't this the man that I am following as God's chosen king? Why is HE serving ME?" Peter even protests, "You shall never wash my feet!" But Jesus calmly explains his actions and continues.
In this act of service, Jesus set the example for each of us to follow: we are to serve one another humbly, and then go and serve the world around us. We are to show that we are His followers by living the same way he lived, by serving the same way he served, by loving the same way he loved.
